Amnesty International has warned that Urmia prison authorities have set up a guillotine-like device to punish the amputation of six people ‘s right fingers.
Diana Al-Tahawi, Amnesty International’s deputy director for the Middle East and North Africa Regional Office, condemned the punishment, saying “the cruelty of this corporal punishment is indescribable.”
Earlier, human rights activists had expressed concern about the possible amputation of the fingers of four people, Hadi Rostami, Mehdi Sharifian, Mehdi Shahivand and Kasra Karami, which the Iranian judiciary confirmed and denied.
Amnesty International now announces the immediate possibility of the execution of the four men and their two brothers, Shahab and Mehrdad Teymouri.
Ms. Al-Tahawi called on Iranian authorities to suspend all forms of corporal punishment.
“The punishment for amputation is in fact torture by a court order and is considered a serious crime under international law,” Diana al-Tahawi said.
Human rights activists call such rulings harsh, barbaric, and inhumane.
All six men in Urmia Prison who are in danger of losing their fingers have been convicted of theft by Iranian courts.
The Abdolrahman Boroumand Foundation says that in the last two decades, Iranian courts have sentenced at least 264 people to amputation of their fingers, of which at least 129 have been sentenced to amputation.
Ebrahim Raisi, the head of Iran’s judiciary, who was directly involved in the mass executions of thousands of political prisoners in the 1960s, has previously defended harsh sentences.
“The amputation of the hand is one of our great honors,” Mr. Ra’isi said a few years ago as the first deputy head of the judiciary.
